Yesterday was a great Friday in Kindergarten! Everyone appeared to be having a lot of fun in the gym. We were practicing catching and throwing~ even trying to catch a ball while running! They were all very excited and totally up to trying it over and over again. Students also had an opportunity to practice throwing a ball to the next person in line.
In math, we worked on extending patterns. I started by drawing patterns on a small white board. We would read the pattern together and then determine what should come next. Next, they had to complete some snap cube patterns that I had started colouring. After they finished two different patterns, they had a choice of working on some math books with additional pattern practice, laminated connect the dot sheets, or some other dry erase math booklets.
We played a literacy game to help us practice letter recognition and printing. To make it exciting, students were able to use hi-liters to trace the letters. Some seemed to feel a little perplexed about how to use them, which I found interesting. We took turns pulling magnet letters from a bag, students then had to find the letter on their sheet, and trace the letter with their hi-liter.
We didn't get through all of the letters, but we did make sure that we found all of the letters that begin each student's name.
We also had to finish our discussion about safety tips and rules that keep us safe. We practiced printing the word "safe" together. Then students were to draw a picture of a rule that keeps us safe at school.
Free choice time was all about building a farming community. There was a lot of house and road construction involved! We learnt a bit about road signs, as they found some within the blocks. I also heard some counting of animals (we have 25) and multiple requests to add a combine to our farm (well, 3 combines).
After last recess, we have been viewing stories on video. Lately we have been watching Alphablocks videos, which teaches about letter sounds and word families. They are easy to find on YouTube and the students are starting to request them!
We also went to the library for the last period of the day. By that time, with absent students and one having to leave early, I had a crowd of 5 curious minds to read aloud with. I was inspired by some sniffling noses, coughs, and how I was starting to feel yesterday afternoon, to read Bear Feels Sick. It sparked some connections about what we do to feel better when we are not feeling well and also some questions about fall (ie: Why do the leaves have to fall to the ground?).
After students found new books to sign out, we gathered together again and read some stories about Batman, graders (which fit in really well with their love of road building!), and hot wheels races.
Our talking circle was small, but sweet, and rounded off our Friday together. Everyone's favourite part of the day appears to always be their time playing together. :)
Hopefully everyone is feeling well next week when we meet again. Enjoy the weekend everyone!
