Plants are everywhere!

Plants, plants, and more plants! We had some new additions to our classroom, once again. It makes our classroom so bright and fresh!

I also set out some art projects as an invitation for students to explore. A few of them colored flower pictures and made some flower crafts during free choice center time.

I had found some grass growing in one of our plants, so we pulled it out and had a look at the roots.

Our bean plants look the same!

It's also that time of year~ the students informed me that the farm toys should come back out, as their dads are working in the fields again.

One of our flowers' stem broke off of the main plant, so one student decided to replant it in our garden center to see if it will grow.

Since there was no growth in our beans to observe, everyone picked one of our classroom plants and observed what they saw, smelt, and felt. They drew pictures of their plant and then I recorded their other observations.

Here's some literature that we looked at today:

Roots was the book that they looked at on Monday.

We also watched a video about the parts of a plant.

Of course, throughout the day we have to check on our plants!

Since we're learning so much and our bulletin board in the hallway was bare, I decided that we should let other people know what we know! So, we brainstormed information that we could share with others. Everyone came up with a part that they wanted to make for the bulleting board (ie: sun, cloud, flower, etc.)

They worked really hard!

The finished results look great!!! I want to add some photographs of their plant exploration as well and we'll see if there is anything else that they want to add.

Great work Kindergarten! :) Have a fantastic long weekend everyone!

More Plants and Mother's Day

 Welcome back!
It was a chilly, rainy Spring day today, but there was a lot of excitement and learning to keep us busy/warm indoors today.

Everyone checked out the Garden Center first thing this morning. One student thought out plants must be dead since they weren't coming up yet. They are keeping a close eye on them! All of our classroom plants got watered again, too.

We learned more about how to plant seeds from Splat the cat.
Then, we planted some green beans! The beans that were planted in the Garden Center on Tuesday were yellow beans and were done so without any instruction/direction.

In the story, Splat places his plant in the window sill and we have already decided that plants need the sun to grow. So, we placed these beans by our window. We will see if they grow faster than the beans in our Garden Center, which are further away from the sun/window.

Then, we wrote in our Plant Observation Booklets and students predicted what they think their plant will look like once it grows.

We also had to create something wonderful to give to the moms for Mother's Day! To get in the right mind space, we read the story, The Night Before Mother's Day.

We made large cards that had hand print flowers on the front. They chose different messages to write on the flower pots (I love you, To mom, I "heart" you, etc..)
How cute!?

They also drew portraits of their moms **love** and answered questions about their moms, which is always amusing and sweet.

We ended our day with visiting some local 'experts'. The Grade 1 class had planted flowers a few weeks ago, so we went to check them out. We were treated to a bonus surprise- Miss Leuer had just started reading Jack and the Beanstalk, so we got to join in for the story! Then, the Grade 1s told us all about their planting experience and what they learned about plants, including what plants need to grow and the different parts of a plant.

Thank you Grade One!

So, our excited 'gardeners' kept running over to see if their plant had sprouted yet. Some were convinced they saw some plants coming up already! Here is day one.

How long before we see some green sprouts? Time will tell!

Have a great weekend everyone. :)

Plants!

Hello! It was great to be back in the classroom today. It sounds like the K's had a wonderful time on Friday with choosing winners for the drawing contest. They also won a pizza party for being the top sellers of the most recent SCC fundraiser! There was definitely a happy dance about that today.

We also had some additional excitement in our classroom this morning- new plants, two tubs of soil to play in, artificial flowers, and a large picture of a greenhouse.
Briefly, they did run a flower store, but the biggest thrill was playing in the soil and planting bean seeds!

Some plant-related books are on display right now too.

A few students also took it upon themselves to water some of the plants that we've had in our classroom since the beginning of the year.

We did some ABC practice today. Students worked to fill in the missing letters in the alphabet.

They also did some matching with the letters.

Some 3D shapes and structures were also built during some extra free time today!

In Science, we further discussed what we know and what we want to know about plants and gardening.

In math, we talked about the number 7. We read a poem about stars and then students coloured their own nighttime scene. They had to count out seven stars and then find the number seven amongst all of the other numbers from one to ten.

We also read the final story from The 7 Habits of Happy Kids: Sleepy Sophie. Sophie was fatigued (we learnt a new word for tired from Sophie!) because she was staying up all night reading. Her mom gave her the advice to not only take care of her mind with reading, but to also take care of her heart, body, and soul. So, Sophie coloured with her friend Lily to make her heart happy, she played sports with Jumper to get some exercise, and she made her soul happy by listening to Pokey play music as she laid in the sun and daydreamed. The lesson was about how balance is best.

In gym, we played a tag game and then practiced catching and throwing balls. :)

Hopefully our excitement about plants will continue to 'grow', as we'll be doing more learning about observing plants in the next few weeks. I'll meet you back here on Thursday! Thanks for visiting our blog.
